Smallpox in Suffolk: fighting the pandemic in the 18th century a talk by Dr Jonathan Belsey

For nearly a century prior to the introduction of Jenner's vaccination, inoculation for smallpox had been widely and effectively practised and, thanks to the actions of a Suffolk surgeon and his sons, thousands of East Anglians had been protected against this devastating disease long before Jenner published his famous paper."

"In this talk, we will explore the impact of smallpox in Suffolk in the 18th and 19th centuries, and see how Robert Sutton of Debenham and his six sons set about implementing the first truly effective public health intervention of the modern era"
